British Virgin Islands Travel Guide

The British Virgin Islands is a British overseas territory and overseas territory of the European Union, located in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico. The islands make up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, the remaining islands constituting the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The archipelago, made up of sixty islands, islets and cay scattered over the north–eastern Caribbean Sea, with pristine palm–fringed beaches, rugged peaks and rich vegetation; although more than 43 islands are uninhabited and designated as national parks. Each of the British Virgin Islands has its own special beauty, character and legends. The islands fall into two types: the majority are steep volcanic islands (including the main islands, Tortola and Virgin Gorda), and a small number of relatively flat coral islands (such as Anegada and Sandy Spit). In fact, Anegada is referred to as "the drowned island" because its elevation is so low. Many people miss it altogether until they sail close to it. For lovers of beauty, peace and tranquillity, the British Virgin Islands offer a complete antidote to mass tourism.

In the British Virgin Islands the resorts are small and luxurious but low key, no high rise, no hotel chains, no all inclusive. Several private islands to suit all budgets, such as Necker, Guana, Cooper and Peter, offer the ultimate in exclusivity, but all hotels and resorts from quaint shoreside B&Bs to three, four and five star properties, provide a stress free get away from it all experience.

Things to See and Do

For the active and adventurous, theres an array of exciting things to do within the islands of the British Virgin Islands. Once can see the spectacular vistas of land and sea from a hike to the top of Sage Mountain, or visit one of the archipelagos 28 National Parks. Experience the rich and eclectic Caribbean culture through a performance from our Heritage Dancers, or the sweet sounds from our fungi bands and steel bands. Indulge in our cuisine at a local Virgin Islands restaurant and taste the island specialties of our award–winning chefs. There is also a range of fabulous Caribbean beaches to enjoy, each with its own special character and vibe.

Beaches

The quality of beaches in the British Virgin Islands, even by Caribbean standards, is very high. Because of the large number of beaches, particularly on the north side of Tortola and the west side of Virgin Gorda, the beaches are generally not crowded (with the exception of Cane Garden Bay on Tortola, which is next to a densely populated area). It is not uncommon, even during tourist season, to be able to have a more remote beach largely or entirely to yourself for an afternoon.

The British Virgin Islands are edged in white sand beaches and surrounded by crystal clear seas with tropical reefs and are renowned as the sailing capital of the Caribbean, a first–timers paradise, since the islands are close together and well protected from the Atlantic. Most visitors to the British Virgin Islands take to the water in some way, whether on a sailing holiday, on a day sail from their hotel or resort, or for diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, kiteboarding or dishing including specialist deep–sea charters. Seeing the beauty and tranquillity of the islands from the water, mooring at the world famous beach at The Baths finding your own desert island for the day, should not to be missed.
