Or you could treat yourself to a helicopter flight over the city.

Day 4: Northern California & Wine Country
Leaving the hills of San Francisco behind, you will drive across the Golden Gate Bridge and journey northwards into California’s scenic wine country. Enjoy a wine tasting in Boonville, where you can sample award-winning Pinot Noir before your journey continues to the charming coastal town of Fort Bragg. Arrive in Eureka for an overnight stay.

Day 5: Grant’s Pass
Your journey northwards through California brings you to the astounding Redwood National Park. The mighty redwood trees soar skywards, many reaching over 350ft tall – a captivating sight. Continue across the state line into Oregon for an overnight stay in vibrant Grant’s Pass.

Day 6: Crater Lake
This morning you will visit Union Creek where you will take a short walk along the picturesque Rogue River, which roars through this area. Then it’s on to Crater Lake, renowned for its purity and deep blue colour. The area’s violent volcanic past has given way to a tranquil, picturesque location with sheer cliffs guarding the lake and its pretty islands. Continue to Eugene for an overnight stay.

Day 7: Portland
The journey along Oregon’s Coastal Highway has to be one of the most spectacular in the world. You’ll wind your way past marshes, cliffs, valleys and sand dunes, stopping at the fishing town of Florence to visit the famous Sea Lion caves (subject to season). Then it’s on to Newport for lunch, with its pretty Old Town and bay front, before you visit a tax-free shopping mall en route to Portland, where you’ll stay for the next two nights.

Day 8: Portland
Portland’s beautiful gardens have given rise to its nickname, the ‘City of Roses’. There are also plenty of microbreweries in the city for anyone who likes a beer or two. Today, you can spend your time exploring the city at your leisure, or join an optional excursion to view the snow-covered peak of Mount Hood, Oregon’s highest mountain, and the Columbia River Gorge.

Day 9: Seattle
Today you reach Washington State, stopping en route to view the stately and active Mount St Helens volcano, which at 40,000 years old, is relatively young. Later you will arrive in Seattle for a two-night stay.

Day 10: Seattle
Seattle’s elegant skyline – made famous by the American TV comedy show, Frasier – includes the futuristic Space Needle. During your day at leisure in this famous city, you could climb to the top for some magnificent views. Or sample a coffee at the original branch of Starbucks, at the famous Pike Place fish market.
