Tunisia Travel Guide

Tunisia officially known as the Tunisian Republic is a country in Northern Africa that has a Mediterranean Sea coastline in the very centre of Mediterranean Africa. Tunisia lies immediately to the south of Italy and Malta. Libya borders Tunisia to the south–east, whilst Algeria lies to the west.

Although the smallest nation in North Africa, Tunisias eventful and often dramatic history has been the result of its strategic position. Over the centuries, the country which was once the exclusive home of the Berbers, has, at one time or another, been settled on by most of the world's greatest powers; from the Phoenicians, Romans and Vandals to Byzantines, Arabs, Ottomans and French. These people have come and gone, leaving their mark upon Tunisia in varying degrees, and providing a rich cultural and social heritage that is unique to this land.

The combination of Islamic culture and European approach makes Tunisia a very popular North African holiday destination. With a climate that rarely dips under 20 degrees, it's a real hot spot all year round.

From Tunisia's list of attractions you would expect a country many times its size. It offers superb beaches, spectacular desert scenery and a wealth of historical sites dating back nearly 3,000 years to when the ancient city of Carthage dominated the entire western Mediterranean.

Things to do

Because the more time you spend here the more youll discover the bliss of basking on our soft sandy beaches, or indulging in our thalasso centres. Play on our world–class golf courses, or get the best price you can, haggling in our souks. Delight at the Star Wars film sets, or marvel at our ancient ruins. Dive into our unique coral reefs, or explore our stunning National Parks. And, of course, there is the Sahara desert, which offers amazing opportunities for camel trekking or exhilirating 4x4 rides.

There can be more to a Tunisian holiday than simply a beach vacation you and your family can look forward to exciting activities such as jet skiing or cycling, nature lovers will enjoy the range of National Parks on offer, while thrill–seekers will find adventure at the water and theme parks.

And if that is not enough, theres always Tunisias family friendly and popular beach destinations such as Tabarka, Raf Raf, Djerba and Hammamet to unwind in.

Once the heartland of Roman Africa, its no surprise that Tunisia is home to some of the worlds finest Roman sites and ruins.Today, evidence of Tunisias rich heritage can be seen in the fascinating sites of Phoenician and Roman Carthage, the ruins of the Punic town of Kerkouane and the medinas of Tunis and Sousse, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites and home of magnificent Islamic architecture.

If you love to haggle, you'll adore the souks. The medinas or old towns, which are home to the souks, are real living places where craftsmen can still be found practising their trade on the streets, and where each street represents a different craft. The nobler trades, such as jewelers, silk merchants, perfumers and booksellers are normally located centrally around the mosque, and the practical trades, such as pottery, can be found towards the outskirts of the town. The best way to shop in this entertaining maze is to wander aimlessly and stumble across whatever takes your fancy.

Nightlife

Theres a great deal more to nightlife in Tunisia than the hotel disco! Venture into Tunis, Hammamet, Port el Kantaoui, Sousse, and elsewhere, and youll find numerous lively bars and clubs which are open all night and serve up a good party. For a dynamic night and a great atmosphere, try Calypso, Cocoloco or Manhattan in Hammamet, Red Iguana in Port el Kantaoui, or Fun Pub and Bonapartes in Sousse youll come home very tired and very happy.
