Czech Republic Travel Guide

The Czech Republic is a small landlocked country in Central Europe, situated south–east of Germany and bordering Austria to the south, Poland to the north and Slovakia to the south–east.

The Czech Republic is not a large country but has a rich and eventful history. From time immemorial Czechs, Germans, Jews and Slovaks, as well as Italian stonemasons and stucco workers, French tradesmen and deserters from Napoleons army have all lived and worked here, all influencing one another. For centuries they jointly cultivated their land, creating works that still command our respect and admiration today. It is thanks to their inventiveness and skill that this small country is graced with hundreds of ancient castles, monasteries and stately mansions, and even entire towns that give the impression of being comprehensive artifacts. The Czech Republic contains a vast of amount of architectural treasure and has beautiful forests and mountains to match.

The Czech Republic lies in the heart of Europe, which also means that its history has been everything if not peaceful. It has always been situated at the point of contention between the East and the West. The Byzantine and Roman empires once fought for the Czech lands, and not much changed until the fall of communism twenty years ago. The Gothic castle and border fortifications from World War Two are remnants of those turbulent times. Jewish monuments also have a story to tell and the best of the cultural heritage is captured by museums and open–air museums and above all the UNESCO monuments.

You will find history in the Czech Republic literally on every corner. The oldest cities were founded during the Middle Ages at the crossroads of trading routes. Coins were minted in them, heavy metals were mined and beer was brewed. Some towns, such as Tbor, were even established as a result of religious reformation. You may easily be able to recognize the most well known and oldest – all of them are located three hours by car from the Capital City of Prague.

Things to do

In order for tourists to more easily gain their bearings, the Czech Republic is divided into 17 tourist regions. These divisions do not copy the institutional borders, but place an emphasis on the related tourism offer. The most visited region is the capital, Prague, but it would be a mistake to stay only here when visiting the Czech Republic. You will only learn what Central Europe is really like after visiting Bohemian Paradise, South Bohemia, South Moravia and the West Bohemia spas. Each region is completely different and each provides a rich and varied spectrum of tourist activities.

You wont find a better destination for the family than the Czech Republic. The Central European climate and conditions are a guarantee that nothing will spoil the time you have set aside for your family alone. What is more, the offer of activities in the Czech Republic is so varied that the young and old are sure to have fun the whole time. Set out for mysterious castles, or visit the dinosaurs even further back into the mists of time. Other than that, you will also like it in the traditional ZOOs. You can abandon yourself to fun and games in the water in one of the many modern aqua parks or just set out into the countryside by bike, by boat or on foot.

Active Holidays

The Czech Republic does not only mean the best beer in the world, sports fans will also come into their own here. Practically everybody will find something to their taste in the diverse countryside of Central Europe. In summer, you can play golf, cycle or head for the water. In winter, ski centres are open for you and you can take part in adrenaline sports and geocaching the whole year round.

Those who are romantic at heart always happily return to the Czech Republic. This is because many places look like they have been taken straight from a fairy tale. This means beautiful countryside, but especially the historical towns with their enchanting squares, Gothic castles and Renaissance and Baroque chateaux, which there are more than 2,000 of in the Czech Republic. If you then so desire, you can even hold your own wedding in one of them. If you dont want to get married yet, but have a weakness for evening gowns and suits, you can set out for one of the traditional balls in the winter months.
