Dominica Travel Guide

Dominica is a part of the region of Central America and is a Caribbean island country between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, about one–half of the way from Puerto Rico to Trinidad and Tobago. In Latin the name Dominica means Sunday, which was the day of its discovery by Columbus. It is the youngest island in the Lesser Antilles, and is still being formed by geothermal–volcanic activity.

Dominica is a diverse and beautiful island, offering a mixture of brooding volcanic peaks, steaming valleys, gushing mountain streams, dense forests, quiet lakes and spouting geysers. Dominica is known as the Nature Island of the Caribbean due to its spectacular, lush, and varied flora and fauna, which are protected by an extensive natural park system, mountainous landscapes and verdant, green, rainforest scenery.

Dominica is the most mountainous island of the Lesser Antilles, and its rivers, waterfalls, sulphur springs, volcanic peaks, cones of lava craters, and even its Boiling Lake, the second–largest, thermally active lake in the world, are some of the islands defining attractions. Its unspoilt rainforests and unique diving spots are also experiences naturalists will really appreciate.

The island offers the most diverse range of flora and fauna in the whole of the Caribbean. More than 160 birds have been sighted on Dominica. It also has a large population of frogs, small tree lizards, bats, butterfly and two endemic parrot species. In addition, 22 species of whale and dolphin have been sighted around the island at different times of the year and spotting excursions have a high success rate. Divers from across the globe visit Dominica each year for its fantastic diving, with dive spots that descend to depths of 1,000 feet.

Dominica remains one of the hidden treasures of the Caribbean, a spectacular example of diverse tropical wildlife and an eco–tourists dream come true. Visitors are sure to enjoy an abundance of lush green tropical forest, cascading waterfalls, and breath–taking coastline.
