Malaysia Travel Guide

Malaysia is a country in Southeast Asia, located partly on a peninsula of the Asian mainland and partly on the northern third of the island of Borneo. West (peninsular) Malaysia shares a border with Thailand, is connected by a causeway and a bridge (the 'second link') to the island state of Singapore, and has coastlines on the South China Sea and the Straits of Malacca. East Malaysia (Borneo) shares borders with Brunei and Indonesia.

A bubbling, bustling melting pot of races and religions where Malays, Indians, Chinese and many other ethnic groups live together in peace and harmony. Multiculturalism has not only made Malaysia a gastronomical paradise, it has also made Malaysia home to hundreds of colourful festivals. It's no wonder that we love celebrating and socialising. As a people, Malaysians are very laid back, warm and friendly.

Geographically, Malaysia is as diverse as its culture. Malaysia is divided into 13 states and 3 Federal Territories, separated by the South China Sea with 11 states and 2 federal territories (Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya) in Peninsular Malaysia and two states and 1 federal territory (Labuan) in East Malaysia.

One of Malaysia's key attractions is its extreme contrasts. Towering skyscrapers look down upon wooden houses built on stilts, and five–star hotels sit several metres away from ancient reefs. Cool hideaways are found in the highlands that roll down to warm, sandy beaches and rich, humid mangroves.

For the perfect holiday full of surprises, eclectic cultures and natural wonders, the time is now, the place is Malaysia.

Things to do

Malaysia, a land of ready smiles and incredible contrasts, beckons the visitor with a rich diversity of experiences. The country is endowed with verdant rainforests, beautiful dive sites and marine parks containing a diversity of flora and fauna unique to this part of the world.

In Malaysia you can choose to city–hop to experience the incredible variety of shopping opportunities, entertainment and accommodation, take an eco–holiday, or lie back blissfully on white sand beaches as you gaze upon the rustic charms of the countryside.

The major festivals of its multi–racial communities are colorful occasions that observe centuries–old customs and traditions.

Shopping

Malaysia is a premier shopping destination in Southeast Asia. Malaysians love shopping, which explains the vast number of luxury malls, stores and street–side stalls in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. If you are a shopaholic, the best time of the year to visit is during the Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival, around August September when the entire country offers great discounts. Please check our listings to find out when the next Mega Sale Carnival is on.

From the antique and the exotic to modern electronic and audio–visual equipment, the constantly changing product range available in Malaysia includes an extensive collection of designer labels from the fashion capitals of the world.

Cuisine

The cosmic array of dishes waiting to be savored in Malaysia can be credited to the countrys 27 million–and–counting, multi–ethnic population of Malay, Chinese and Indians who together have influenced the colorful cuisine. The potpourri is enriched even further from with influences from the British, Dutch and Portuguese who once colonized the country.

Malaysian food is not one particular kind of food, but instead a unique culinary spectrum of tastes and textures. Its various dishes originate from Malaysia's historical heritage and multi–ethnic population that has melted together to create an exotic cuisine unlike any other.
