Saint Lucia Travel Guide

St Lucia is a picturesque, exquisite emerald gem island in the clear Caribbean waters. It is an isle characterized by its quiet charm and magnificent topography, the majestic twin peaks which rise sharply from the shoreline to form distinctive landmarks, lush rainforests, and beautiful palm fringed beaches. Much of the island is rural, small coastal fishing villages give way to banana and coconut plantations within deep valleys topped by rich, mountainous jungle. The rugged terrain continues beneath the sea in a diving haven of underwater mountains, caves and drop offs. This is a perfect tropical island, located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, where you can experience the small villages, and open aired markets amongst the friendly locals. The stunning beauty, diverse accommodation and abundance of activities make it the ultimate paradise destination, an ideal place to relax, honeymoon and take time out of busy schedules.

St. Lucia has become one of the Caribbean's fashionable destinations, although thankfully remains a long way from being over developed and crowded. Bananas are still bigger business than tourism in this island paradise. There is an assortment of exciting and exotic activities available on St. Lucia. There are plenty of unique experiences available to suit all tastes, from taking in the lush surroundings and tropical wildlife on a exhilarating zip–wire through the rainforest, to exploring the island's steep coastlines and lovely reefs which offer excellent snorkelling and scuba diving, visiting the Sulphur Springs and Diamond Waterfalls in Soufriere. The rainforest preserves of St. Lucia's mountainous interior are one of the Caribbean's finest locales for hiking and bird watching.

Traditional Foods

St Lucian food consists mainly of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and a variety of curry, jerk, rice and stewed dishes. The coal pot is a delicious stew, traditional to native carib cultures and can be found at many local restaurants in Castries, Soufriere and Vieux–Fort. Vegetarian and meat rotis can be found at a number of small local restaurants. Ask any local for the best roti shop and he or she will tell you how to get there. Rotis are usually made fresh in the morning so, if eating a spicy early lunch is of interest, it's highly recommended. Local cuisine is prepared throughout the island so, depending on where you are staying, ask a local if he or she knows someone/somewhere that prepares local food and you will be sure to be welcomed somewhere nearby.

Places to Go

Castries
Castries is the island's commercial centre, capital and busy port. The liveliest part of the city is Jeremie and Peynier Streets where the Castries Market houses scores of product and handicraft stalls. Founded by the French in the 18th century, the city was destroyed by fire three times between 1785 and 1812 and again in 1948, subsequently most of the historic buildings have been lost. One area that has survived is Derek Walcott Square, a quiet square surrounded by 19th century buildings.

Marigot Bay
Marigot Bay is a sheltered bay that is backed by green hillsides and a little palm fringed beach. The bay was the setting for the 1967 musical Dr Doolittle starring Rex Harrison. Marigot Bay is a popular anchorage point for yachters and the site of a marina with a customs office, a small market, water, ice and fuel.

Pigeon Island National Park
Pigeon Island National Park is more an historical monument than a national park, with ruins dating back from the 1700's including a fortress, barracks and rusting canyons, the grounds have fine views of the coast and nearby Martinique.

Rodney Bay
Rodney Bay is a large protected area that includes the resort area of Reduit Beach and the small fishing village of Gros Islet. An artificial channel cuts between the two areas opening to a large lagoon that is the site of Rodney Bay Marina. Gros Islet consists of simple wooden houses with rusting roofs, lots of rum shops and a shore full of painted wooden boats. Gros Islet is also famous for its Friday night jump up.

Soufriere
Soufriere was founded by the French in 1746 and named after nearby sulphur springs. On the northern side of Soufriere dock is the Soufriere Market where you can purchase locally made produce such as baskets, straw hats and spices. The Pitons provide a scenic backdrop to the south and the island's highest peak rises above the rainforest just a few miles inland.

Frigate Islands Nature Reserve
The Frigate Islands Nature Reserve runs along the eastern coast and is a summer nesting site for frigatebirds, herons and a few of St. Lucia 's rare birds (the Ramier pigeon and St. Lucian oriole). It is also home to boa constrictors and the more dangerous pit viper.

Maria Islands Nature Reserve
This tiny area is the only habitat of the kouwes snake, one of the world's rarest grass snakes and the Maria Island ground lizard. A sanctuary for seabirds, it is closed in the summer nesting season.

Sulphur Springs
Sulphur Springs is barren terrain with pools of boiling mud and steaming vents, the steaming vents release great quantities of sulphuric gases which are responsible for the yellow mineral deposits blanketing the area. The putrid smell, similar to rotten eggs is hydrogen sulphide.
