This evening we sit to down a western themed dinner at Pinnacle Pete’s restaurant.

Day 3 – Scottsdale – Sedona – Flagstaff
Enjoy the change of scenery as we travel north towards the beautiful red rock formations of Sedona. On the way we visit the ancient dwellings of Montezuma’s Castle, incredibly carved into the cliffs. At Sedona there is time for lunch before continuing past Oak Creek Canyon and the Ponderosa stands of Flagstaff for our first glimpse of the Grand Canyon. The views that the south rim provide are truly wonderful and it is easy to see why it is considered to be one of the wonders of the world. This evening we stay at the Radisson Woodlands Hotel.

Day 4 – Grand Canyon – Lake Powell
This morning we visit Grand Canyon National Park, where those who wish have the opportunity to take a fabulous optional helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon, before you travel along the rim to Desert View for arguably one of the most expansive views of this massive canyon. This afternoon we continue our journey to Lake Powell, the second largest man-made lake in America created by the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam. A controversial project, the dam flooded ancient Native American sites and natural formations. We stay at the Lake Powell Resort.

Day 5 – Lake Powell – Monument Valley – Mesa Verde
We depart for Monument Valley this morning and on arrival take a fascinating jeep tour of these striking Monoliths. There is also time to explore the interesting visitor centre. Monument Valley has been the backdrop to so many of the most famous ‘Westerns’ over the years and has become synonymous with the image of the old Wild West. This afternoon offers a spectacular look into the lives of the ancestral Pueblo people as we visit Mesa Verde National Park and its striking cliff dwellings. Overnight at the Far View Lodge.

Day 6 – Mesa Verde – Santa Fe
Today we travel into New Mexico, stopping on the way at Durango, an old frontier mining town and home to the famous Durango and Silverton Railway. After free time here our journey continues to Santa Fe and our hotel the Hilton Thunder Head Resort.

Day 7 – Santa Fe
A day to explore America’s oldest state capital, and one which is easily explored on foot through its wooden-colonnaded streets of adobe houses and quaint shop fronts. Our guided trolley tour is the perfect introduction to its colourful art galleries, plazas and monuments. The afternoon is at leisure and you will want see the Loretto Chapel and its ‘miraculous staircase’.

Day 8 – Santa Fe – Albuquerque – Holbrook
Leaving Santa Fe, we take the scenic Turquoise Trail along the east side of the Sandia Mountains to Albuquerque’s lovely old town. After lunch we continue to Petrified Forest National Park to take a scenic drive past the fossilised remains of an ancient forest. This evening we overnight at the Best Western Arizonian Inn at Holbrook.

Day 9 – Holbrook – Tucson
We depart this morning and head south through the White Mountain region for some excellent views of the Salt River Canyon as our route snakes to the bottom to cross the Salt River and here you will see why some call this the ‘mini’ Grand Canyon. We continue to Globe for lunch before visiting the 320-acre Boyce Thompson Arboretum, founded by a mining magnate whose vision of a park set in a spectacular location was realised in the 1920s and is still an extremely popular location today. Later, the final leg of our journey today takes us to Tucson where we stay at the Doubletree by Hilton.

Day 10 – Tucson
This morning we make a visit to notorious Tombstone where some real Wild West action took place and visit the OK Corral, where Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday amongst others had their famous gunfight in 1881, which, in true American fashion, is re-enacted daily. After taking time to enjoy this old west town we travel to the Mission San Xavier del Bac, a lovely Franciscan mission known as the ‘White Dove of the Desert’.

Day 11 – Tucson – Phoenix – In flight
Our journey back to Phoenix will take us via Saguaro National Park to view the legendary and sometimes eerily shaped cacti, forever associated with the Wild West. Departing the park we transfer to Phoenix Airport for our British Airways flight to London Heathrow Airport.

Day 12 – London
