Wild Plains of Tanzania

Day 1 London, Nairobi
We begin with the Titan’s VIP Home Departure Service® to London Heathrow Airport and our direct scheduled Kenya Airways flight to Nairobi.

Day 2 Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, Arusha
We connect in Nairobi for a short flight to Kilimanjaro, where we are met by our safari vehicles and transferred to the Mount Meru Game Lodge, an intimate hideaway with fine gardens and its own wildlife sanctuary. The remainder of the day is at leisure.

Day 3 Arusha, Lake Manyara
After a charming nature walk, we continue our journey south through the Masai Steppe, beyond picturesque African villages and lush plantations, to sparkling Lake Manyara and our accommodation for the night, the Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge. There is time to unwind with a sundowner and appreciate the exceptional views of the Great Rift Valley, before dinner is served.

Day 4 Lake Manyara, Serengeti
Our morning game drive reveals the scenic wonder of Lake Manyara, bounded by the steep sides of the Great Rift Valley in a setting described by Ernest Hemingway as ‘the loveliest in Africa’. Highlights may include vast flocks of flamingo, hundred-strong troops of baboon, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and giraffe congregating on the grassy plains and, if we are lucky, the region’s famous tree-climbing lions. In the afternoon we proceed to another of Tanzania’s natural jewels, the Serengeti, spending two nights at the Serengeti Sopa Lodge.

Day 5 Serengeti National Park
Swahili for ‘the endless plains that go up to the sky’, the Serengeti is well-named and fully justified in its reputation as one of the foremost safari regions in the world. Tanzania’s oldest national park is now recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its extraordinary wildlife and, though it is at its most impressive during the frenzied ‘great migration’, when the plains thunder with millions of hoofbeats, the Serengeti is a joy to visit at any time of year. Two marvellous game drives offer chances to spot all of the ‘big five, along with countless zebra and antelope, cheetah, hyena, giraffe and upwards of 500 bird species.

Day 6 Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater
Between the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater is a huge, steep-sided gorge, as much as 90m deep in places. This is Olduvai, famed for the extraordinary series of fossilised remains discovered in the canyon walls. We enjoy a picnic lunch and a visit to the small interesting museum here, before continuing to the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, set high on the rim of the crater, our base for two nights.

Day 7 Ngorongoro Crater
The largest unbroken caldera in the world and a natural amphitheatre of epic proportions, with 600m-high walls enclosing 260km² of grassland, lakeland, swamps and forests, the Ngorongoro Crater is home to the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa – up to 30,000 land animals at any one time. As well as the big cats and the more common big grazers, the crater is one of the likeliest areas to yield sightings of the extremely rare black rhino – we keep a close lookout on our morning game drive. In the afternoon, we visit a traditional Masai village for an insight into modern tribal life.

Day 8 Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park
Leaving the crater behind us, we head across the Ngorongoro Highlands, passing colossal wheat plains and coffee plantations en route to Tarangire National Park. This delightful, untamed park hosts abundant wildlife, including elephant, oryx, eland and even the elusive leopard. Morning and evening game drives introduce these or other characterful creatures, with a break for a relaxing afternoon swim at the Tarangire Sopa Lodge, a fitting venue for our last touring night.

Day 9 Tarangire National Park, Kilimanjaro, London
Our journey home begins with a memorable drive northeast through coffee and banana plantations to Arusha, where we stop for lunch, before meeting our flight from Kilimanjaro to Nairobi and an onward direct, scheduled, overnight Kenya Airways flight to London Heathrow.

Day 10 London
Arrival at London Heathrow Airport where our staff will greet you and transfer you to Titan transport for your journey home to your own front door.
