Q:

Can I drink the tap water abroad, is it safe? Answer

A:

Tap water is fine to drink in most hotels and resorts in Europe and America. However, if you are unsure then it is better to buy bottled water for drinking, brushing your teeth, etc. Make sure that when buying bottled water it is from a trusted vendor/supplier and that the bottle seals are not broken. If you are unsure about the tap water do NOT take ice in your drinks (unless it has been made using bottled water).

Q:

Should I be careful about what I eat abroad? Answer

A:

You should always make sure that you introduce foods you wouldn't normally consume into your diet slowly, especially exotic fruits, etc. With regards to hygiene always ensure hot food is served hot and cold foods, such as ice cream, are served cold. Foods that have been left out for prolonged periods of time or those that have been contaminated by flies or other insects should be avoided.

Q:

What factor sunscreen should I use when sunbathing? Answer

A:

This depends on your skin type. Being sensible in the sun is very important whilst on holiday and even at home. You should always avoid getting sunburnt. Therefore you should use the highest factor suncream possible and one that protects against UVA and UVB radiation. Avoid sunbathing around midday, when the sun is at it's most powerful. If you do sunbathe, build up your time in the sun slowly and always err on the side of caution.

Q:

What injections or immunisations do I need? Answer

A:

Everyone's medical history is different, so you should check with your Doctor in plenty of time before travelling. Some countries have specific immunisation entry requirements. This information can be found on the FCO website - http://www.fco.gov.uk.

Q:

Can I take my medication on holiday overseas? Answer

A:

You should always ensure you have enough supply of medication to last longer than the duration of your trip, This is in case of any unlikely, unforseen delays that could mean you are overseas for longer than intended. Depending on your medication you may wish to check with your doctor that it is legal in the country you are visiting. As a matter of precaution you might consider taking your prescription with you. If you face any problems regarding your medication whilst abroad your travel insurance company or the local embassy should be able to help you.

Q:

What happens if I incur medical or hospital expenses overseas? Answer

A:

Although you hope it will never happen, this is a prime example of why travel insurance is essential. Hospital and medical bills overseas can run into thousands of pounds and without travel insurance you will be liable to pay them. You should always check your travel insurance policy for medical coverage details.

Q:

What is an EHIC or E111 form? Answer

A:

EHIC stands for European Health Insurance Card. This entitles the bearer to free or reduced medical costs when visiting certain European countries. An application form can be obtained from your Post Office. (Please note the E111 form no longer exists). We still recommend that you take out Travel Insurance.

Q:

What is DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis? Answer

A:

DVT is a blood clot that develops in a deep vein. There is evidence that suggests flights of more than 4 hours may increase the risk of DVT developing. If you have any concerns about this we recommend you speak with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to advise you further and possibly suggest some in-flight exercises and precautions you can carry out in order to minimise the risk of DVT.

Q:

Do I need to notify you of any health problem or disability? Answer

A:

If you have any existing health problem or disability that will affect your holiday or mean that you require special assistance you must inform us at the time of booking. You should also inform your Travel Insurance company.
